World dependence on Chinese penicillin needs to end

The US and the world's dependence on China for medicine not only makes no sense, it is killing people. Penicillin is well known for saving lives, but many companies decided that since they made little profit, they would stop making it. During the pandemic, this was found to be stupid, even though it should have been considered that long before then. China is well known for sending toxic products to other nations that kill the citizens of those nations. One company has started to fix this issue, but it leads to far more questions.

World Problem

Let’s start with the fact that very few within the American press are covering this story, which makes you wonder how much any of them care as they claim. I literally only found Al Jazeera covering this issue, which they did an excellent job of in 2017. The shortage was causing people to lose their lives around the world at that time, though the US would not truly feel the impact of the shortages of penicillin until the pandemic. Children around the world were dying, people were unable to get needed shots to keep them alive, and it was seen to be growing worse.

Companies Involved

The first thing to realize is that the main reason for this problem is that some nations, such as the US, have to deal with high wages which cuts any chance of profits down greatly. So, they turn to China and slave labor for a chance to make money. India, another country that can make products without people demanding inflation causing wages, relies on China for many of the chemicals to make the drugs they can. If there are transportation problems, such as dealing with pirate attacks or another government enforced pandemic, then this will hurt nations not taking the drugs.

American Company

Jackson Healthcare reopened its plant in Bristol, Tennessee in 2021, which was after it needed to close because of bankruptcy. Since that time, they have been able to grow, but it makes one wonder how long this can remain. As China controls almost half the market and can control pricing. People have a tendency to look at the price and not the quality of products when they buy things. There is also the fact that US made products naturally cost more because of laws, employee demands, and executive excess.

People need to start figuring out how to correct this problem, especially as there are many reasons the supply from China can be cut off quickly. China is not a reliable ally and they will see a continuingly weakening US government as a reason to find ways to keep hurting the nation. Other nations need the drug, which means they need a way to obtain it, which means a decently priced US option can make their life better and longer. People need to pay attention to this issue, as it can mean the difference between life and death.
