Here's a thought, we as a nation have allowed the government to stifle innovation in several areas to the detriment of safety and well being of the nation. Nuclear technology has advanced, but not from the country that spent the money and lives to bring the technology to fruition. It is not sexy to discuss, but it is a necessary thought process when this nation is relying on other nations for so many of the needs people have when it comes to powering their lives.
Market Destruction
When the Soviet Union changed to Russia, the government there took their time to learn about the free market. The United States started working with them to remove the nuclear material from their old missiles, which, at that time, the Russians started asking questions. They asked about the uranium market and what it took to get involved. The US people involved answered all the questions, while the Russians absorbed it all. This, decades later, has the Russians in charge of the world's uranium market in several ways.
Nuclear Technology
For thirty years, the United States government stifled the free market by not allowing any private company to refine uranium for power plants. This meant that the US lagged far beyond other nations, as the US was still using technology from World War 2. Germany regrew their industrial base, with Siemens taking control of nuclear technology innovation.
Now, one effect of this is that when the US and Iran had the P5 +1 talks, which had 5 nations deciding how to deal with Iran during the talks. Russia was selling Iran nuclear material, Germany was selling them enrichment equipment, and the other 2 had lucrative trade with Iran. Iran was supposed to be the +1, but it was the US.
Another aspect of the technology issues is the fact that the US is getting its enrichment done by other companies from other nations. Russia controls 44 percent, or more depending on the source, of all the enrichment in the world. We do not directly get our uranium from power plants enriched by Russia, but they have some power in the issue.
Mining Interests
The US government controls who run mines, with massive input from environmental groups. This led, until recently, to most of the active mines being owned by companies from nations other than the US. The 3 mines that are fixing to be opened out west are going to be American owned, but this was after massive protests. The Uranium One mine that was in Wyoming is now owned by an American company, which was caused by the protest of Americans who found out about it.
The Uranium One company was bought by Russia with the blessing of the Clinton State Department under the Obama Administration. Russia made this a demand for their signature on the Salt II Treaty, which was basically worthless, but it was a feather in the cap of Clinton. Russia got a Canadian mining company that had the most active US mine. The uranium was only supposed to go to American or Japanese power plants, but it was found to be going to Russia.
The United States needs to fix its uranium situation, which means it needs to fix its government. Uranium is part of an industry that can't keep having corruption, but the government does not seem to understand any of that. They stifle innovation, which hurts the US consumer and the development of science and technology. Guess what, it needs to be the US taxpayer who needs to step up.
