The United States has changed some in who they buy oil from, but there are still questionable locations that are sources of crude for the nation. Canada is the largest producer of oil coming into the US, with Mexico being number two on the list. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Venezuela lead the list of nations that should make people ask why they are on the list. Saudi Arabia and Iraq should make people wonder because of the unstable area that could lead to the supply being cut off. Venezuela is run by a totalitarian government that has started having a worse record on human rights than the Saudis.
Canada and Mexico
Keeping Canada and Mexico stable is necessary, along with the fact that Canada has been an ally for over a century, even with the current government. Mexico needs ways to become more stable, which can be helped by a prosperous oil industry. With all the problems in the nation, getting them to the point that they see us as an economic ally will slow down their citizens coming here and hopefully will cause them to help secure the border. Some of this sounds like pipe dreams, but stability brings about good reforms, normally.
Saudi Arabia and Iraq
With Saudi Arabia being our main Islamic ally in the Middle East, there are many reasons to spend some money there. They are a repressive government, but important to what stability there is in the region. The US still has a pipe dream of keeping Iraq stable, which is one of the considerations to buy oil from them. This does not mean it is working. Both nations are in an area that is dangerous to transport crude oil, or anything else, from. The area, no matter what any nation does to help, is violent and constantly changing how this happens. The purchases should be paid attention to.
Venezuela
There is absolutely no reason to buy crude oil from a nation that has a government that openly hates the United States. While many in the Democrat Party supported the change to totalitarianism, the government starved and outright killed many of their citizens to solidify their power, exactly like Stalin, Mao, and Che did. The US, under the Trump administration, actually stopped buying from them. Under the Biden administration, this has started back up. It should make people wonder why.
The United States can handle its own production, as was shown while Trump was President. Using oil from Canada and Mexico makes sense, but nowhere near the level that we do. Saudi Arabia and Iraq make no sense from a true logistical or financial standpoint, along with the problem of politics from these purchases. Venezuela makes zero sense in any manner, no matter the claims of sanction issues.
