There is a government publication known as Issues that covers scientific discussions on various topics within the scientific community. One of the more recent articles by Dr. Leigh Turner seems to put forth an interesting supposition that people should not trust the research from private institutions, but completely trust what comes from the government. On top of that, he is more than willing to go after those who do not go with the government mandated story on issues like climate change and stem cell research. He is not a scientist without a voice, so it is disturbing that he wants to shut up others with his platform.
Doctor Turner
Dr. Leigh Turner is the Executive Director of the University of California at Irvine Bioethics Program and a professor in the Department of Health, Society, and Behavior at UCI. He has a doctorate in Religion and Social Ethics from USC. He has worked at other institutions as a visiting and associate professor while researching ethics in various areas of medicine.
Private Institutions
Turner has a habit of showing examples of how private institutions are not ethical, while ignoring the many scandals that have arisen from government approvals and facilities. It can be said that both have their advantages and disadvantages, but he seems to believe that the government is altruistic in the way he discusses the need for government oversight in both his article and his X posts. If it were not for private institutions, the human race would be heavily reliant on both Russia and China for space exploration currently. It seems he leans more toward the authoritarian forces that Einstein and Planck fought against.
Government Oversight
No matter what scandals come from government control, people like Turner seem to believe that this corruption is the best for the world. While government oversight has been somewhat helpful, there are far more instances where the government caused death and destruction. Take a look at the TVA 2008 coal ash dam spill. TVA is a quasi government organization that did not pay attention to a dike at a coal ash pond, which ruptured and killed many instantly, injured others, and led to many dying from medical issues from the cleaning up process. But Turner believes the government is the best way to move science forward.
Transnational Groups
One of the ways that Turner has to counter what he sees as problems with nations like China is to use transnational organizations, which oddly seems to contradict his stance on private organizations. He at least realizes that China is a bad country to have any say in scientific advancements, which also is likely to censor scientists. The problem is, that he is someone who wants to shout down those he disagrees with from his platform. That platform is as a government employee who has a large voice via his positions. So, he should consider that disagreements in the scientific community are as old as time, and this is what spurs real advancements.
We need to consider, as a nation, who we allow to be put into public roles when they can hinder advancement. England learned during World War 1 that scientists should not stay in the realm of theory and need to make real world advancements. It was not all done with public money, with one scientist even working during the war to prove the theory advanced by a scientist who was employed by the enemy. We need private money in science for the exact reasons we need people like him with less of a voice, as government control of science is one of the hallmarks of a totalitarian environment.
