The Biden administration recently participated in the Third Summit for Democracy where they have set goals to help other nations find a way to have a freer society, according to them. One of the more interesting goals, which the administration is spending millions on, is to support free and independent media. It would seem to be a little bit hypocritical that they do this while this nation still arrests journalists, most especially those journalists working to uncover facts on such issues as the January 6 Capital march.
Administration Goals
The fact sheet that the administration issued had two goals listed for helping the media in other nations.
“USAID’s International Fund for Public Interest Media – announced at the second Summit for Democracy – has committed nearly $9 million in 32 grants across 16 countries to independent media outlets in urgent need of support and to strengthen their long-term sustainability. The U.S. Government’s initial seed funding of $20 million has leveraged an additional $32 million from 15 governments, philanthropies, and corporate entities.”
The State Department launched two programs under its Journalism Protection Platform to combat impunity for violence against journalists and strengthen holistic security for journalists and independent media outlets, including those operating in exile.
Arrested Journalists
There is a website named the US Press Freedom Tracker that said that 12 journalists were arrested in 2023 for questionable reasons. While the website has a distinct liberal slant, it still shows that they see the problems. Steve Baker, a Blaze Media reporter, was arrested for his coverage of January 6 just this month. This is not the only time that conservative media has been attacked for their coverage. Media, sadly, has to have a slant to build an audience to keep profitable most times. Arresting them also happens because of this.
It would behoove the Biden administration to follow their own advice when it comes to protecting the rights of journalists. It also needs to be carried down to the state level, no matter the politics. Considering that most journalists have to find ways to do the trade they love in this nation without being part of major outlets, this is becoming more important.
